Crispy air fryer chickpeas made simple! A vegan, gluten-free and dairy-free base recipe for endless flavor combos!

A Foolproof Recipe for a Savory, Crunchy, Dairy-Free Snack That’s Vegan, Kid-Approved and Protein-Packed!

Hi! I’m Julie, a military spouse, mom of three, and the blogger behind Our Beautiful Chaos.

If you’ve been here a while, you’ll know that most of what I share comes from real life in our home. Busy days, military family life, feeding my boys safely, and finding ways to still put good, comforting food on the table without spending my whole day in the kitchen.

In our family, dairy-free living isn’t a choice or a trend. It’s something we navigate every single day because one of my boys has a life-threatening dairy allergy. That means everything I make has to be safe, but it also has to feel normal, filling, and something everyone actually enjoys eating!

That’s why I care so much about recipes like this one. They make it possible for all of us to enjoy the same food together, without worry.

So I created this Basic Air Fryer Crispy Chickpeas recipe. They’re completely dairy-free, vegan, and made with just a handful of pantry staples. It’s one of those recipes that’s easy to love because it checks every box – quick, affordable, healthy, and safe for everyone at the table!

They’re crunchy, savory, and incredibly versatile. This version is the perfect base for endless flavor combinations. From spicy taco seasoning to sweet cinnamon sugar or even a simple garlic-herb blend. You can make them salty and bold or lightly sweet and cozy for the holidays.

The best part? They’re ready in minutes and make a great after-school snack, lunchbox filler, or salad topper.

So grab a can of chickpeas and your air fryer, snack time is about to get a whole lot easier (and crunchier)!

Equipment

You don’t need a fancy kitchen setup for this one. Just a few basics:

  • Air fryer (or convection oven if that’s what you have)
  • Mixing bowl
  • Colander for draining chickpeas
  • Clean towel or paper towels for drying
  • Silicone spatula or spoon for tossing
  • Airtight jar or container for storing leftovers

Available on Amazon.com [ad]

Ingredients

Serves 2 to 4

  • 2 cans chickpeas, drained and rinsed
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil

Seasonings come later so you can go sweet or savory!

Instructions

Step 1: Prepare the Chickpeas

Rinse and drain your chickpeas. Lay them on paper towels to dry for 10 to 15 minutes, patting if needed. The more moisture you remove, the crispier they’ll become.

Step 2: Preheat the Air Fryer

Whilst the chickpeas are drying, preheat your air fryer to 395°F.

Step 3: Toss with Oil

Once dry, place the chickpeas in your preheated air fryer and spray with 1–2 tablespoons of oil, tossing gently to coat. You want a light mist, not a heavy coating.

Step 4: Air Fry

Spread the chickpeas in a single layer, giving them space to crisp up. Air fry for 20 minutes, shaking the basket every 5 minutes throughout, to make sure they cook evenly.

Step 5: Season to Taste

When they’re done, transfer the chickpeas to a mixing bowl while still hot. This is the perfect moment to add any seasoning you like, sweet, savory, or spicy. See below for ideas!

Step 6: Cool and Store

Let them cool completely before storing in a jar or snack container at room temperature for up to 3 days. Re-crisp in the air fryer for 2 minutes if needed.

Storage & Flavor Variations

Storage: Store in an open jar or container at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Extra Crunch: For a firmer crunch, pop them back in the air fryer for 2 minutes before serving.

Flavor Ideas:

  • Cinnamon Sugar: Swap savory spices for 2 tbsp brown sugar and 1 tsp cinnamon.
  • Garlic Lime: Heavenly with an ice cold beer – just add your favorite garlic lime seasoning blend and some olive oil.
  • Garlic Herb: Add dried parsley and thyme for an Italian twist.
  • Taco Spice: Sprinkle in chili powder and cumin for a smoky kick.
  • BBQ Style: Toss with paprika, brown sugar, and a hint of smoked salt.
