The Day Everything Changed: Why We Chose to Homeschool

Why a Life-Threatening Allergy Led Us to Homeschool

Homeschooling was never really part of our plan.

My husband and I both went to public school, and growing up, I didn’t know anyone who was homeschooled. Even after we had children and saw a few family members choose homeschooling for their families, I always thought it wasn’t something I could do.

I told myself I didn’t have the patience. I didn’t think I would be a good teacher. I assumed my kids would go to public school just like I did.

Then everything changed.

Our oldest son, Adrian, has a life-threatening dairy allergy. What many people don’t realize is that dairy allergies can be just as serious as other food allergies. Unfortunately, they are not always treated that way.

When Adrian was in first grade, we trusted the school to keep him safe. We worked with staff, communicated his allergy, and did everything we could to make sure they understood how serious it was.

Yet despite all of that, there were multiple incidents involving his allergy.

By the third EpiPen incident, we had reached our breaking point.

That third reaction was the worst and scariest allergic reaction Adrian had ever experienced.

I can still remember the fear of watching my child being rushed into an ambulance. I can still remember the second EpiPen injection that had to be administered. Even now, thinking about that day brings tears to my eyes.

As a parent, there are moments that stay with you forever.

That was one of them.

After that day, I looked at my husband and told him I couldn’t send Adrian back. The fear and anxiety that came with dropping him off each morning, wondering if he would be safe, had become too much.

For us, homeschooling was not about academics at first.

It wasn’t about curriculum choices.

It wasn’t about wanting to do school differently.

It was about safety.

It was about making sure our son could learn in an environment where we knew every ingredient, every meal, every snack, and every person responsible for his care.

What started as a decision made out of necessity eventually became something much bigger.

We discovered that homeschooling gave us flexibility, more time together as a family, and the ability to tailor education to each of our children’s needs. We found a community of homeschool families who welcomed us and encouraged us when we felt unsure.

The truth is, if you had asked me years ago whether I would homeschool my children, I would have laughed and said absolutely not.

Yet here we are.

Not because it was always the plan.

Not because we thought we would be great at it.

But because life took us down a path we never expected, and we chose to do what we felt was best for our child.

Homeschooling may not be the right choice for every family, and that’s okay.

Every family has different circumstances, different needs, and different reasons for the decisions they make.

This is simply our story.

And for our family, it all started with a little boy who deserved to feel safe.
