Easy Overnight Raspberry Chia Pudding With a Chocolate Crackling Topping! (Dairy-Free)

Easy Dairy-Free Raspberry Chia Pudding Recipe with Frozen Raspberries, High-Protein Yogurt and a Chocolate Shell Topping!
Hi! Iโm Julie, a military spouse, mom of three, and the blogger behind Our Beautiful Chaos.
If youโve been here a while, youโll know that most of what I share comes from real life in our home. Busy days, military family life, feeding my boys safely, and finding ways to still put good, comforting food on the table without spending my whole day in the kitchen.
In our family, dairy-free living isnโt a choice or a trend. Itโs something we navigate every single day because one of my boys has a life-threatening dairy allergy. That means everything I make has to be safe, but it also has to feel normal, filling, and something everyone actually enjoys eating!
Thatโs why I care so much about recipes like this one. They make it possible for all of us to enjoy the same food together, without worry.
Lately I’ve become completely obsessed with chia puddings.

I don’t know why it took me so long to jump on the bandwagon because they tick almost every box for our family. They’re packed with fibre, they’re surprisingly filling, I can make them the night before, and somehow they feel much more like dessert than breakfast.
When something is healthy and my boys think they’re getting a treat, I’m definitely counting that as a parenting win.
This raspberry version has quickly become one of my favourites. Frozen raspberries are affordable, easy to keep on hand, and once they’ve thawed and been mashed into the yogurt they create the prettiest bright pink pudding. It feels special without needing lots of expensive ingredients, which is always something I appreciate when I’m feeding a family of five.
Then comes my favourite part. The chocolate topping!
If you’ve ever had one of those chocolate crackle desserts where you tap the top with your spoon and it breaks into little pieces before you dig in, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.
That thin layer of dairy-free chocolate hardens in the fridge and adds the most satisfying crunch against the creamy chia pudding underneath. Every spoonful has sweet raspberries, creamy yogurt and little pieces of chocolate all together.
As you can see in the photos below, I simply spread the melted dairy-free chocolate over the chilled pudding before popping it back into the refrigerator to set. It only takes a short while before the chocolate firms up into that delicious crackly topping.
One thing I love about recipes like this is how well they fit into real family life. I can make one for myself, prepare several at once for busy mornings, or even make a batch for the boys if I know we’re heading out early the next day. Having breakfast already waiting in the refrigerator makes hectic mornings feel so much calmer.
It’s also become one of my favourite dairy free recipes for military families. If you’re a military family or service member trying to navigate dairy-free living, almost everything I use for this recipe comes straight from our local commissary here on base.
Frozen berries, dairy-free yogurt, chia seeds and allergy-friendly chocolate chips are all things I can usually grab during a normal grocery shop, making this a really achievable breakfast or healthy snack without hunting down specialty ingredients.
Now let’s head into the kitchen and make this delicious dairy-free treat together!

Equipment
Available on Amazon.com [ad]
- Medium cereal bowl or glass meal prep bowl
- Fork
- Measuring cups
- Measuring spoons
- Small microwave-safe bowl
- Silicone spatula or butter knife for spreading the chocolate
- Microwave
- Refrigerator
Ingredients
Makes 1 large serving
- 4 oz frozen raspberries, thawed
- 3/4 cup (117g) dairy-free high-protein yogurt
- 1 1/2 tablespoons chia seeds
- 1 tablespoon dairy-free chocolate chips (I used Nestlรฉ Toll House Allergen Free Semi-Sweet Morsels)
- Optional fresh raspberries for serving
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Thaw and Mash the Raspberries
Place the frozen raspberries into your serving bowl and allow them to thaw.
Once softened, use a fork to gently mash them into a chunky raspberry mixture. I like leaving a few little pieces intact because they add great texture throughout the pudding.
Step 2: Add the Yogurt
Add the dairy-free high-protein yogurt directly into the bowl with the raspberries.
Stir everything together until the yogurt turns a lovely bright pink and the raspberries are evenly distributed throughout.
This is one of my favourite parts because you can already see how pretty the finished pudding is going to be.
Step 3: Stir in the Chia Seeds
Add the chia seeds and stir really well.
Make sure you scrape around the sides and bottom of the bowl so the seeds are evenly mixed throughout the yogurt.
The chia seeds will begin absorbing moisture almost immediately, so giving everything a thorough mix now helps prevent clumps later.
Step 4: Refrigerate Overnight
Cover the bowl and refrigerate overnight.
By the next morning the chia seeds will have absorbed the liquid, creating a thick, creamy pudding that’s packed with fibre and wonderfully satisfying.
As you can see in the photos, the pudding becomes beautifully thick while still staying creamy.
Step 5: Melt the Chocolate
Place the dairy-free chocolate chips into a microwave-safe bowl.
Microwave for about 30 seconds, stir well, then continue heating in 10-second intervals until completely smooth.
Be patient here because chocolate burns surprisingly quickly.
The Nestlรฉ Toll House Allergen Free chocolate chips have become one of my favourite dairy-free baking staples, and they’re perfect for this recipe.

Step 6: Create the Chocolate Crackling Layer
Pour the melted chocolate onto the centre of the chilled chia pudding.
Using a small spatula or butter knife, gently spread the chocolate across the surface until you’ve created a thin, even layer.
You don’t need perfection here. A rustic finish actually makes the crackly topping even prettier once it sets.
You can see exactly how I spread mine in the photos below.
Step 7: Chill Until Firm
Return the pudding to the refrigerator for around 20 to 30 minutes.
The chocolate will harden into a crisp shell that cracks beautifully as you dig your spoon through it into the creamy raspberry chia pudding underneath.
It’s honestly one of the most satisfying desserts…or breakfasts…I’ve made in a long time!
Notes
- Frozen raspberries are usually much more affordable than fresh and work perfectly here.
- High-protein dairy-free yogurt makes the pudding extra creamy and filling.
- Feel free to make several portions at once for easy breakfasts throughout the week.
- A thinner layer of chocolate gives the nicest crackly topping.
- This recipe easily doubles or triples for meal prep.
Troubleshooting
Leave it in the refrigerator for a few more hours. Different yogurt brands vary slightly in thickness.
Stir in a splash of dairy-free milk before serving until you reach your preferred consistency.
Microwave in shorter bursts and stir thoroughly between each one. Chocolate burns much faster than most people expect.
That’s completely fine! Those little cracks actually become part of the crunchy topping.

Storage
- Store covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
- This recipe isn’t suitable for freezing because the yogurt changes texture after thawing.
- For the best crackly topping, add the melted chocolate the evening before or a few hours before serving.
Serving Ideas
One of the things I love most about this raspberry chia pudding is how easy it is to change things up depending on the day. It’s just as lovely for breakfast as it is for an afternoon snack or a healthier dessert.

FAQ’s
Absolutely. Fresh raspberries work beautifully, although they do tend to be a little pricier. Simply mash them with a fork before mixing with the yogurt.
Stored in the refrigerator, it stays fresh for up to three days, making it perfect for meal prep.
Yes. Any dairy-free yogurt will work. High-protein yogurt simply makes the pudding a little thicker and more filling.
Usually it just needs a little longer in the refrigerator. Stirring the mixture well before chilling also helps the chia seeds hydrate evenly.
Of course! The pudding is delicious on its own, but the chocolate shell adds a fun dessert-like crunch that my boys absolutely love.
